Rod Hyson Sr. and Rod Hyson Jr. started Bald Head Island Rentals almost 10 years ago with just a few homes on Bald Head Island. Within three years, the company grew to almost 40 homes, representing the truly unique and best-located homes on the island. They were the first to offer valet and full concierge services to their guests. Just naturally, guests who wanted to invest in Bald Head Island turned to them for guidance. Now Cape Fear Realty is one of the most successful agencies on the island, selling more than 20 million dollars of real estate in 2006. In addition to real estate sales on Bald Head, Cape Fear Realty soon included 2 real estate offices in Southport and one on Oak Island.
Development activities first started when the Hysons, and Chapel Hill residents, Jim and Bridget Chirico purchased a little restaurant on the water in Southport's historic Yacht Basin district. Realizing that locals and tourists alike were seeking a unique and fun dining experience led to the birth of Fishy-Fishy Cafe. Now Fishy-Fishy Cafe's reputation extends throughout North Carolina and the Southeast. Unique menu offerings, stellar presentations, a tropically-inspired dining room, several open decks and incredible sunsets on the water make Fishy-Fishy Cafe one of the most popular dining spots in Brunswick County. Soon another casual waterfront dining spot was added on the beach at Oak Island. Here guests can stroll along North Carolina's longest pier and enjoy seafood specialties in an open air dining room or deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The success of Fishy-Fishy Cafe led to a series of land purchases in the historic Yacht Basin where development activities are underway for a mixed-use commercial and residential community on the water. Plans include shops on the first floor with luxury condominiums above and include Mediterranean-inspired rooftop gardens with views of the surrounding waterways. In addition to the mixed-use offerings the development will include single-family homes starting at 1.9 million.
In addition to the Yacht Basin, the company is now in the final stages of completion of The Preserve, a luxury master-planned condominium community on The Intra Coastal waterway between Oak Island and Southport North Carolina. The Preserve sold out its first phase in less than 90 days. Amenities include walking trails, pool, clubhouse, exercise facilities, tennis and oceanfront beach club. Southport Crossing, a sister community, will have the same amenities and of course one of Southport's most desirable locations. And coming soon, is Cape Fear Realty and Development's crowning achievement to date—the master-planned community of Stevens Park. Here, the company has joined forces with the town of Southport to provide turn-of-the-century style ball fields and parks with future plans for an Olympic competition pool and clubhouse. This extraordinary single-family residential community will offer a variety of homes from low-maintenance cottages to marsh-view estate homes.
