Boating

Southport is a boater's dream location because it offers many boating activities within the area. From pleasure boating to jet skiing and shrimping, many different boating activities are enjoyed here. Fishing is just as much a part of Southport as the sand that lines the waterfront which means that large fishing boats are in abundance gliding along the waterway at Southport.

The beauty of nature in our area is not to be missed. As much is located on the water, boating offers the perfect opportunity to explore the local island beaches, the creeks or the shell islands that abound off of Southport. Whether gliding down the waterway or playing in the ocean, being on the water offers a spectacular glance into what this area is about - Natures beauty and the waters which surround it.

Abundant wildlife is found in and around the water. Pelicans, Egrets and Herons can be spotted as they look for their morning meal. Playful dolphins jump in the water as they pass. Sand crabs can be seen scurrying back to their tiny holes while larger blue crabs can be enticed into a crab trap for an evening of fine dining. White beds of plump oysters lie in the river and no local culinary delight can compare to the smoky yet salty taste of local oysters roasted over local oak.

There are several Southport area charter fishing businesses. Pleasure boating is easily accessed with the marinas containing dry dock storage, allowing individuals to keep a boat year round on call. Leaving a boat in the water without running the motor for long periods of time will cause corrosion which locks the propeller on the motor in place permanently and can damage the engine. Hence, dry dock storage is a great idea for anyone who owns a boat in the Southport area.

The waterway offers a perfect location for those who wish to have a smooth relaxing ride without waves. Jet Skis are also available at almost every dock as well. The waterway provides a perfect location for learning how to jet ski because it generally has no waves and has large shallow areas on either side that are perfect for falling off and being able to stand up and flip the jet ski over.

Southport is an ideal location for sailing as well. With so much to see and explore, and our temperate climate, sailing is a much practiced pastime in the surrounding Southport area. Windsurfing and kiteboarding have also become popular local sports.

Every town has its own specific rules and regulations for owners of personal watercraft. In Southport you may not speed within six hundred feet of the shoreline or a fishing pier. Speeding in a no wake zones is similar to causing as much destruction as burning a small plot of land because it will disrupt and potentially destroy the natural habitats of many animals that live in the marsh lands. Slowing down for a small amount of time through no wake zones is a small price to pay for the beauty of the natural Southport wetlands. There is plenty of water to roam in personal watercraft and abiding by these rules will make everyone's experience relaxing and pleasant.
